How do I stop my toilet from running?

There are few things as annoying as a toilet that never stops running or one that stops and starts every few minutes. It’s also expensive, because every time you hear it running, you’re unnecessarily adding more money to your water bill. You need to fix it, but what is it you need to fix?

When your toilet’s running, it’s usually one of two common culprits. The first is the ballcock diaphragm. If you can see or hear water coming from this valve, you’ll need to replace it or the seat at the top. Don’t worry. It’s an easy little project.

So is the second most common reason for running water: the tank flapper. To figure out if this the problem, reach into the tank and press down on the edges of the flapper. Did the water stop running? Then your tank flapper has probably worn with age and needs replacing.

Whether you’re replacing your ball cock diaphragm or your tank flap, you’re going to need a sponge and bucket on hand. You’re also going to want a crescent wrench, basin wrench and screwdriver. And, of course, your replacement parts.
