When is the best time to plant grass?

Most grasses can be planted in late winter or early spring, as soon as weather permits.

A good time to seed your cool season lawn is around Labor Day or somewhere between August 15 and September 15. Temperatures will have dropped a bit, making the seeds and new grass less likely to be scorched, but the soil is still warm enough for quick germination so the young grass plants have the upcoming cool season to become established. Plus there are usually less weeds for the new lawn to fight with and there will likely be less foot traffic on the growing grass.

Warm-season grasses are best planted in late spring when the weather is mild enough to let you get the grass established, but the hot weather of summer and the most vigorous growth are just around the corner.
