How can I tell if something was painted with an oil-based paint?

Oil-based paint usually feels smoother to the touch, but if you can't tell for sure, here's a quick, easy way to do a test.

How to test if paint is oil or latex-based?

Pour a bit of an acetone-based solvent like nail polish remover on a rag or paper towel and rub it on the surface. If nothing rubs off it's oil; if paint rubs off on your rag, it's latex.
