How do I replace a doorbell?

Cut power to the doorbells at the breaker panel. Then:

  • Detach your old doorbells and rewire your new doorbells with wire nuts.
  • If your new doorbells have a different voltage than your older doorbells, you may also need to replace your transformer.
  • Once everything is wired, turn the power back on and test your new system.
  • If something appears to have failed with your doorbells wiring as opposed to the doorbell unit itself, the easiest way to “fix” that problem is to install a wireless doorbell unit.
