ThanksGRILLING Season is Here!

Westlake Ace Hardware’s BBQ expert offers up timely and delicious tips for your Thanksgiving feast.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (November 14, 2019) – Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and as you start preparing your menu and prepping the house for your guests, now is the perfect time to think outside the kitchen and use your grill to prepare many of your holiday dishes.

“ThanksGRILLING” not only frees up space in the oven, it gets you outside and gives your guests unexpected and delicious surprises,” says Westlake Ace Hardware’s champion BBQ expert Andy Groneman. “From turkey to side dishes to dessert, you can cook an entire Thanksgiving meal on a grill.”

Some of Groneman’s favorite ThanksGRILLING dishes include Turkey Breast Roulade, Baked Cornbread Bacon and Pecan Stuffing, Twice-Baked Planked Potatoes, Apple Pear Crisp, and Grilled Pumpkin Pie. “When it comes to Thanksgiving and your grill, the possibilities are endless,” he adds.

When grilling turkey, Groneman points out that white and dark meat need to be cooked to different temperatures. He says, “When the white meat on a turkey reaches 155 degrees, it’s done. But dark meat isn’t done until it reaches 165 degrees. The best way to adjust for the differential is to separate the meat or ‘spatchcock’ the bird before cooking.”

For a perfectly grilled Thanksgiving turkey, Groneman offers these handy tips:

  • Spatchcock a whole bird or use a boned turkey breast. Spatchcocking is the easiest way to cook the bird so that all of the pieces roast evenly in a 350-degree smoker or grill.

  • For the best flavor, brine it overnight (up to 16 hours) or marinade the turkey for up to eight hours.

  • Don’t overcook the white meat! When the juice is clear and a meat thermometer reads 155-160 degrees, it is fully cooked. Remove the meat from the grill and tent it with foil while the dark meat finishes cooking (it needs to be cooked to 165-170 degrees).

  • Cooking time for a 12 to 15-pound bird is approximately 90 minutes (plus 30 minutes of rest time).

On Saturday, November 16, come into any Westlake Ace Hardware location between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the ThanksGRILLING & Traeger Turkey Day Demo. Westlake associates will be on hand to show off the latest BBQ grills and accessories, offer samples, and share great tips on having the best ThanksGRILLING ever.
