TRANSCRIPT

When you think energy efficiency and lower utility bills, you probably start thinking about big projects like replacing your windows or insulating your attic. But really, the small things can make a big difference and save you a lot of money. Take this, for instance. [Holds up a tube of caulk in a caulk gun.] A little bit of caulk can go a long way in keeping out the cold. You’ll want to apply it anywhere there’s a gap on the exterior of your house. Look at the joints between your foundation and siding. Check the space where your roof overhang meets your house. Look for gaps between your siding and your windows and doors. Also check the places where the conduit and piping for your utilities, telephone and cable come into your home. The great part about caulk? All that work you do to winterize your home will also keep the bugs out once Spring rolls around.Beyond caulk, apply weatherstripping around your windows and doors. That’s where most air leakage occurs. There are a few different types of weatherstripping depending on the type of window or door you’re trying to seal. And don’t forget your garage door. It could use a little weatherstripping, too. You can also install insulating plastic over your windows or use a kit like this (hold up shrink film). To protect your outdoor facets, install a faucet cover and wrap any exposed pipes in your garage or basement with pipe insulation or heat tape. A water heater blanket, when properly installed, can reduce energy loss by 25% to 45%, and that saves money.
